Layered Fabric Hair Clips with Silhouette Cameo

Hi there everybody!  I woke up at 5 this morning, and couldn’t breathe with allergies, so I decided to get up instead of risk waking up my family with my loud breathing sounds!  I finished these clips last night, and decided to get them posted.  I haven’t attached the hair clips to them yet because I need felt of the right color, but better to post them almost done than not at all, right? :)

I had seen this tutorial from The Thinking Closet last week, and instantly had to try it myself.  I hadn’t been successful in cutting fabric before with the cameo, but once I figured out that you peel off the paper of the interfacing, and stick the sticky part on the mat, it worked just fine!  I have used both Steam to Seam 2 and regular old Heat N Bond, and both have worked well for me.  So don’t stress too much about getting the silhouette made interfacing, although I’m sure it works great!  I just like to use what I’ve got.  I did set my blade to a 4 because it’s getting dull, and double cut everything.  I hopefully will get a new blade soon, and that should help it work a bit better!

I followed everything from the tutorial, but I didn’t sew the buttons on!  All those layers of interfaced fabric was just too think for my needle and thread!  I cheated and looped the thread around the button holes, and then tied a knot in the back to get the sewed look.  I glued them on with trusty E6000, and called it good! :)  The shapes and sizes I used are listed at the bottom of the page!

I made several of each fabric, and then I could make several clips.  I have enough to keep, and giveaway to several people!  The small ones are just a bit bigger than 1 inch, and will be perfect for baby shower gifts or little girls’ Birthdays.

Well, that’s all for today!  I promise I have been doing non-silhouette crafts lately as well.  I need to snap a few pictures and share, don’t I?!?  I’m thinking more of these clips will definitely be in my future.  I’m even thinking of using one as an applique on a zipper pouch!

Shapes Used: 

I drew a circle in the soft ware.  Sizes:  1.5 inches, 1 inch, and .75 inch

Layered Petal Flower Sizes:  I sized the largest flower to just over 2 inches for large flowers, and just over 1 inch for the small flowers.

I found a scalloped circle I have (I didn’t save this file—whoops! so I don’t know what I used).  Sizes:  2.5 inches, 2 inches, and 1.5 inches.  The 2.5 is a little bigger than I like, so I did the others a bit smaller!

Easy Button Bobby Pins

Saturday afternoon, I got the urge to craft.  I started to get out my fabric, but little Dash demanded to be held. There was no way I could sew or cut through fabric and hold an infant safely.  So I decided to use the infant carrier, and make these hair clips.  I waited until he was down for his nap to glue, and got a few made in less than an hour.  Today, my sister came over to craft and we opted to make more.  They are quite addicting to make I must say!

I used Ashley’s tutorial  from Make it and Love it to make the cover buttons without a kit.  I must say she made it super easy for me to make all sorts of adorable buttons!

Then I used this tutorial (found via pinterst of course!) from Elisa Mclaughlin Designs to attach the buttons to the bobby pins.  I think I will also use this method with alligator clips. 

I used hot glue on one batch, and E6000 on the other.  Just use what you like. :)

Well, better go save my fussy son!

Ruffles and Trim Shoe Refashion

Hi everybody.  I hope you had a great weekend.  I did.  On Saturday, my husband went to work to use the shop to work on one of our vehicles.  I was left home, and my husband said that I didn’t have to clean if I didn’t want to.  (I had literally exhausted myself every day last week from trying to get so much done.  I needed a break, and was glad to take it!)  I finished and knocked out 3 different projects.  This shoe refashion was one of them.  It’s not super original, but I really like how it turned out.

Here’s the before.  I bought these shoes 6 years ago, and they were definitely showing signs of wear.  I have glued down the silver linings a couple times.  It needed it again, so this time I used E6000.  Love that stuff, but can’t stand the smell of it right now. Yuck.

The bows have even been repaired at least once, and were just looking really sad. I was ready for a change.

The bows came off…

I made a tube of satin-y fabric, and flattened it so the seam was in the middle.  Then I gathered it using my easy way to make ruffles, and glued it to the shoe.  Once that was done, I decided I needed some trim.  I got a few inches of trim from Joann’s, treated the ends with Fray Check, and glued the trim on top of the ruffles. 

So for just a few dollars, I ended up with a new look to some very old shoes.  I’ve looked for over a year for new ones, and just haven’t found any I liked.  So I’ll make do for awhile more with the refashioned version! :)

Turquoise Beaded Necklace

Hi there!  I have been super busy doing some fun crafts, and for some reason I just didn’t get anything posted last week.  Oops!  Sorry about that.  Today I did a giant photo shoot and am writing a whole bunch of posts today to schedule out for the next couple weeks.  So I should be around at least this week.

And as weird as it sounds, this necklace that Cinderella wear is the inspiration for this necklace.

got these beads for my birthday back in June, but with the move, I never used them.  So here I am, in January using my birthday present.  I made a simple necklace with small spacer beads between each turquoise bead.  Because I didn’t have enough beads to fill the whole necklace, I placed them all into the center and secured each end with crimp beads so the beads wouldn’t slide to the back of the necklace.

Here’s a picture of me wearing it, and I don’t normally wear it in this color combo, but I didn’t want to change my outfit just for a blog picture.  Keepin’ it real.  And maybe I’ll wear it like this sometime because I kind of like the contrast! :)

Tutorial Tuesday: Painted Doily Apron

*On Tuesdays, I try to show you either a tutorial I created, or feature a tutorial I’ve followed.  I hope you enjoy today’s project!*

Hi there everybody!  I finally have a project to show you.  Isn’t that great? :) I am finally feeling like crafting after a couple months of exhaustion from early pregnancy.  Then it took me a month or so to get back into the swing of things and actually want to craft!  I have recently been playing with paper and fabric paint (but not together).  It’s always fun to branch out and try something slightly different (even if it is still super easy to do!)

I found this tutorial from Maybe Matilda several months ago, and fell in love.  I found an old shirt and tried it.  It turned out cute, but I ended up not using enough paint…my sister saw it and said, “You have something on your shirt.”  I sheepishly told her that I painted it there….She laughed and said…”Oh sorry!”  So I decided to try to redeem myself by trying the same technique and using more paint.  This time I got an inexpensive ready to embellish apron from Michael’s, and went to town.  It turned out awesome.  I love it, and because it’s a gift I may need to make myself one too. :)

I took pictures of the process, but I did everything exactly like Rachel did, so I decided to simply refer you over there.  I also used the fabric paint medium, and like this option because I can get the cheap paint and use it for more than just fabric.  And like she says, it does well in the wash too! :)

How to Make Beaded Watch Bands Using Beads as Spacers

Hi there!  I’ve got a non-sewing tutorial for you today.  I needed a bit of a breather, and since beads were my first crafty endeavor, here we go again.

I’m going to show you how I made this watch band. (They were super popular a couple years ago, and still are…I just never made them.  I was given one from my student teaching cooperating teacher, and now I’m hooked!) 

If you’ve noticed most watch bands, they have silver pieces divide each section of the watch band.  They are called spacers.

And I couldn’t find any in my area…or 400 miles away from my home either (although I didn’t look very hard because I was spending over $100 on just fabric…more on that later).

So I decided to improvise.

I used other beads to act as the spacers, and I came up with this fun look.

You’ll need: 

Claw Clasps (I have used small, but I got bigger this time)

Stretchy Cord- I use 1.0 mm, but I think I’d like to go a tad smaller next time I buy it for using smaller holed beads.  I’ve heard that .8mm works well, but I couldn’t find it when I was hastily looking.

Scissors, beads, a brain

Ready, Set, Go!

Cut a piece of string.  I can’t tell you how long, because you’ll have to figure it out according to your wrist size.  And because we’ll be using beads as our spacers, add on several inches to that for safety’s sake.  The first band I made was barely long enough for my husband to tie.

Take two of your clasps, and form a bead sandwich like so.  You’ll want to you either 2-3 small beads, or one kind of short/long one.  Trial and error baby.

This is important.  See how both of the hooky things where you open them are facing the same way?  I didn’t think about this the first time I made a band, and ALL FOUR clasps were set differently…may need to chop that one up and fix it.  So pay attention.

String beads any way you like. 

Big, small, chunky, matchy-matchy, pattern, or spontaneous. 

It’s up to you.

When you’re about 1/3 done with your band, slip on one of the beads you’ll be using for your spacers.  (Pre-test the beads to make sure you can slip 2 pieces of the string through your beads.  Some beads may not have a big enough hole.)

Now take the other string, and slip it through the bead to make a loop.  Confused?  Have no fear, I took more pictures of the process on the 2nd spacer of this band.  Stay tuned.

Pull tight, and you’re 1/3 of the way!

Add more beads until you’re 2/3 of the way.  This middle section should be your longest section by the way.  The other two are kinda short.

 

Slip on that ‘spacer’ bead. 

Then take the other string and put it through the other end of the bead.  Does that picture help?  Thought it might!

Pull those two strings, and you’re 2/3 done with this thing!

Put on more beads until you’ve got it to the size you want.  Then make another clasp sandwich, making sure the hooky things are facing the same side as the OTHER clasps on the other end. (Sorry, forgot a picture of this part!  Oops!)

Then tie a square knot (right over left, left over right).  Then I tied one more right over left, just for fun.  Then I spaced the beads out like this, super glued it, and kept my hands there to take a pic for you. (I was terrified of getting super glue on me by the way!  But I made it.)

Let the super glue dry, cut the ends of your string close to the knot, and wear it out to walk to the mailbox (that’s where I’m headed!)

White Embellished Belt

Hi there!  Don’t worry, I’m not sharing another shirt today.  I have something else for you.  Here’s a belt (from an old tshirt…does that surprise you any?) that I made using this tutorial as inspiration.  I wanted it to have a more finished look because I was student teaching at the time and wanted it to look professional.  So I simply sewed a tube of fabric, embellished with flowers like this, and attached velcro to the ends.

I wore it with cardigans (one of which I will show you sometime soon…maybe I’ll even take a picture of them together!) and solid colored shirts, and loved how it finished off my outfits.  I used silver/gray thread (which you probably can’t really see) on white fabric, and it added a little bit of elegance to the belt.
