Craft Room Redecorate: Dresses Banner (Take 2!)

Hi everybody!  I hope you are having a fabulous weekend.  This week, I announced to my husband that I wanted to redecorate my craft room.  I told him that I wasn’t at all changing my purple door, or anything drastic, but that I wanted to add a little more color instead of JUST purple like I had been going for a couple years ago.  The fact is---I was doing this with VERY limited craft supplies (and no silhouette cameo) when I did this over 2 years ago.  I feel like the papers/colors I chose was by necessity of using what I have.  Two years later, and 6 paper packs (or more!) and a whole bunch of embellishments later, I’ve got a lot more resources. 

I also decided to go a little trendy this time.  I haven’t really jumped on the houndstooth/chevron bandwagon, but I decided I’d try a little bit of everything.  I decided this room will be ‘girly modern.,’ defined by me of course!  I’m loving what I  have done so far.  Mostly it’s just recovering things I already have made, so I am not using a lot of brain power! :)

I whipped up this quick banner this morning.  I used the same file as this banner, but changed up the flourishes to these from Miss Kate.  I used white sketch pens for the flourishes, and love how they turned out.  (I love the sketch pens by the way!  They can add a little bit of detail in a lot of different projects.)  I also changed the neckline of one of the dresses using the edit points feature because it wasn’t cutting well on the paper I was using, and that was THE right paper for that dress. :)

Kitchen and Sewing Room Wall Art

Hi everybody!  I hope you’re enjoying spring weather.  We have had a pleasant week, with rain and cooler temperatures which has been fantastic.  I love it when it rains because I don’t have to water the garden or our baby grass! :)

I participated in Silhouette’s Weekly Shape Challenge.  I had so much fun, I made two projects!  The first I’ll show is a simple banner I made for my craft room.  I needed to craft with something girly, and had bought the dresses during the 50% off shape sale.  I thought the dresses would look so cute strung along on a banner.  I hung it with a piece of lace and mini clothespins. I love the look of the clothespins so much, I used it on both my projects. I got them through a giveaway, but I’ve heard you can find them at Wal-Mart. I hung it on my pegboard and just love how it turned out!

I had seen this project from A Lemon Squeezy Home a week or so ago, and loved how she displayed several quotes at once.  I decided I needed to do a similar project soon.  When I heard about the shape challenge, I knew that I could do this project and add a few banner pieces to make it whimsical and colorful.

I decided I wanted the display to be in a frame, but I didn’t have one big enough at my house.  So I hit a slightly creepy thrifty store, and found one for a dollar.   Isn’t it lovely?  I got some red spray paint and went to town on it.  I only had to do one coat, which was fantastic!

I had my helpful husband install hardware so I could string the baker’s twine across in rows.  I used the half circle banner, cut it out in a few types of paper, and clipped them up.  I made small rounded rectangle cards and used silhouette sketch pens for the quotes.  Now it’s hanging in my kitchen, and it cheers up the room a whole lot!  I think this is probably one of my favorite projects every.  When I get tired of these quotes, I can change things up with the seasons or even do an advent calendar with it.  It was a pretty easy project, and only cost me $5!

Craft Room Accessory: Glittered Pen Holder

Here’s an easy peasy project I did sometime last year and never posted it.  I found the project here via pinterest, and was able to complete this during my son’s nap one day.  In fact, I think it took about 10 minutes minus drying time.  I love having a sparkly addition to my craft room.  I got the container from the dollar store, the glitter from Michaels for very little, and had the mod podge on hand.  Cheap project, and instant gratification=my kind of craft!

Making it Ours: Craft Room Accessories

*Remember how every now and then I’m sharing my adventures of home improvement projects?  Here’s another one for you!  I hope you enjoy the ongoing series!*

Hi everybody!  I’ve been working on several little things for my craft room lately.  I’ve been using it for a few months, but I’m tweaking things to how I want them to stay.  In fact, my husband and I are in the process of building me a brand new craft desk with 2 cabinets and plenty of counter space!  I can’t wait til it’s done (although it will probably be right before or right after the baby’s born, and who knows when I will have a chance to use it. :)

The first thing I made, was a brand new pin cushion.  I had been looking for a container to use for a few months, and never found what I was looking for.  My intentions were to follow this tutorial to make a cupcake pin cushion like Care did at Obsessively Stitching.  I never could find the right container for he right price.

My husband and I were at DI one Friday evening, and I saw all the glass tea cups and dishes.  I instantly bolted to that isle and started going through them.  My husband surely thought I was crazy that night!  I found this little tea cup for 50 cents, and snatched it up!  Then the next week,  I got some purple fleece and made my pin cushion.  I wanted to make beaded pins like Katy did at No Big Dill, but that project was going to put too big of a bulge in the budget.  So I found these pretty pins at Joann’s (armed with a coupon of course!) and love them.  It’s nice to have something fancy sometimes.

I also made a Cell Phone Charger holder.  I used the tutorial from Ashley at Make it and Love it found here.  It was a pretty slick project, and I like having a place to stow away my cords when I’m not charging something.  And I love that it matches my craft room! :)

This is the latest project I’ve done, and finally last week I hung it up!  I used a canvas as the base, and then I cut out the letters and bunting using my Cameo.  I took a remnant of a purple undershirt, cut it into a strip, tied knots, and attached it to the back of the canvas for easy (and cute) hanging.  I found this printable here via pinterest, and decided I needed my very own in purple.  I love how the letters ended up not very centered, and the words aren’t super straight.  It reminds me that perfection is not key, but the joy of creating is!

Craft Room Clean Up!

Hi there!  Today, I’m posting some of the things I’ve gotten done this week.  Cheri over at I am Momma Hear me Roar has been having Git ‘er done week.  She is hosting a linky party today, and I am joining in.

I began the week thinking I would fix the curtains for the baby’s room, finish hanging wall art in the kitchen, weed the garden, and crazy stuff, but it just didn’t happen.  Let’s blame it on being 36 weeks pregnant, okay?  :)  I did wipe down the inside of my husband and my car, and wiped down some cabinets in the bathroom. 

(Before the clean up…but this picture was taken a few months ago, so imagine more things on the floor…like way more!)

So I spent an hour or two going through my craft room and tidying it up- while sitting most of the time. :)  Since I got my Cameo for Christmas, I have purchased more paper and supplies including vinyl and really had no where to put them.  My husband and I are in the process of building me a new craft desk, but I decided I might as well get things organized the best I can, and then I can just slip things into the cabinets under the desk once it’s done (which will probably be right before or right after the baby makes his grand entrance).

Cleaned off my desk,

Organized paper and vinyl into totes, and folded up extra fabric and put it in my cabinet.  I also hung my rotary cutting board and ruler on the wall.  They were always falling over, and driving me crazy.  I love that they have their own home now!
I didn’t take a before picture of the cabinet, but the bottom 4 shelves were a mess.  Things were balled up and shoved into place, and I took it all out, refolded the fabrics, and put like things together the best I could.  I could have done more, but I know it will change a bit once my desk is complete.

And you know how your mom always said that you’d find things that were lost when you cleaned your room?  I found a scraper to help apply vinyl that I’ve been missing for two months!  I thought it had gotten thrown away accidentally.  I was soooo excited, I had to share a picture with you too.  I can’t wait to use this handy tool again!
Whew!  I think I can actually think straight in here to create, but I think I’ll take a nap instead!  That was a lot of work.

Craft Room: The Grand Reveal!!!

Hi there everybody!  I told you I would do it, and I did.  How's that for awesomeness!?!  As I was taking pictures, I decided that I would show you a few pictures of the room today, and on Monday I will have a detailed post about everything I did, where I got it, etc. etc. etc.  Otherwise, this post could be SUPER picture heavy and long.  And who really has time to read a long post anyway?

 Here's a look at the 'other,' corner of my craft room.  My sewing table and sewing machine (Bernina 1008--love her!) and shelves for extra fabric/stuff I'm working on (or supposed to be working on).  The pink and brown tote is my paper stash.

Sorry for the squished-ness of some of the pictures.  This room is only about 8.5 ft by 7.5 ft, so it's tricky to photograph.  I love having a small room though, it's easier to keep clean.  I have plenty of other house space to spread out in for large cutting projects and such, but this room is just right for everything else.

Sewing Room Sneak Peeks!

Alright, I've been saying for weeks that I'm going to show you my finished craft room.   Well today, I finally found the cord for the camera to connect it to the computer (it was sitting on the computer desk right in front of me all along.  Who knew that the charging cord for the wall would be gray and the computer cord would be black...I thought they all matched!  Tricky husband's camera!).  So, today I will once again show you a classic before, and a couple afters of the basics of the room.  Then today, I will tidy up the room, stage it for pictures, and snap a couple.  Maybe if I'm good I'll get the rest of it up by tomorrow!  Now wouldn't that be productive of me?

Enough words.  Let's show you some pictures.

Another Before Shot

New Flooring. Less than $80 at Lowe's with Labor Day Sale and Change of Address Coupon from the post office. (And we did the entry way right outside this room with some of the flooring as well).

Primer $17,
wall paint (free=came with the house and didn't really match anything)
trim $30 and paint $15 for trim and door. 
(We did re-texture because of some funky things going on, but I'm leaving out those costs because they aren't typical issues for other people).  We also scraped off the cottage cheese ceiling and re-textured and painted that the same color as the walls.

Switch covers and outlet covers $6.
And lighting.  Those globe lights just weren't doing it for me.  They made the room incredibly dark, and as a contacts wearer who loves to sew for hours on end, I needed a better solution.
Enter this.

Utilitech 48" 2-Light Utility Fluorescent Wrap Light from Lowe's.  We got it for less than $20 with a coupon.

Overall Cost= $168 for a brand new craft room.  And if you count the other costs, I would say it would have rolled in right about $200.  Everything else, as you'll see in my later post was done with things I already have or with minimal costs (like $5 or less).

So I was left with a brand new room, and had no idea what to do next!  Find out (hopefully) tomorrow what I did with the place!
