Just a Thought

Hello everybody!  I haven’t been blogging much lately.  I just haven’t felt like it.  But today, I think I just need to write a bit to get some things off my chest.  Last week I had to take Dash to a doctor’s appointment.  It was an extremely warm day, I and needed to stop at the grocery store on the way home.  While pulling into the driveway of the parking lot, my car died.  I started it back up and got into a parking lot.  I immediately unloaded the carseat (and Dash of course :)  from the car and into a grocery cart and decided what to do.  I thought I saw my mother in law’s van in the parking lot, so I walked closer to investigate.  If it was her, I could find her in the store and ask for a ride home.  As I neared the van, an older lady began yelling at me.  “You’re going to cook your baby!”  I thought she was just saying that it was hot outside.  I laughed and said, “I know.”  She proceeded to yell and said in a desperate voice, “You need to get him some air.”  Dash was simply covered up by the car seat canopy I had made him.  I made it a little short on the sides so he can usually always have air circulation.  He was fine, and actually more protected from the sun and heat than I was.  I didn’t even know how to react to this ranting woman, so I turned around and went into the store.

This lady had no idea what I had just gone through.  She had no idea that my car was giving me trouble and that I was counting my blessings that I had made it to a parking spot.  She didn't  know that because I was worried about my baby being out in the heat, I hadn’t checked my car out very well.  It was 111 that day, and I was rushing to get him inside the store.  Don’t worry, the story ended well.  I was able to get a ride home, and my husband checked my car out when he got home.  He couldn’t find anything wrong, so I still have a car to drive. 

As much as I’d love to be upset at this woman, I am taking it as a reminder that sometimes people are going through a lot more than we think they are.  And if we were aware of what they are going through, we would probably be a little more accepting and lenient on him.  It was a great reminder to be slow to judge others.

Hi everybody!  Posting time is far and few between, but a car trip to the post office and utility office was just what my tired guy needed.  He is zonked out in his car seat and I’m not moving him til this is posted! ;)

Two More Feet, Ten More Toes

Our family grew by two feet!  Introducing our little guy, “Dash.”  At least that’s what he’ll be known as in blog land.  One of my tech’s at the hospital called him Dash because he would move away from the heart monitor while he was waiting to come.  He didn’t like being messed with. :)

Born April 26, 2012.  9 lbs 3 ounces. 21 inches long.  Big baby for a little 5ft 1in mom!  We had a rough 30 hours of labor, with a possibility of a c-section, but through several small miracles and a wonderful doctor and several amazing nurses, we made it.  We are all doing well!  I even got to sew for a bit yesterday!

My mom always told me to touch my sister’s feet when she was a baby, so I decided that Dash’s feet would be safe to show and tell online. :) *If you know me in real life, shoot me an email at necklacebliss(at)gmail(dot)com, and I will be happy to send you a full picture/announcement.*

Three Things Thursday

Hi everybody!  Have you noticed the trend lately with people sharing Ten Things on Tuesday, or Five on Friday?  I decided to jump on board and share three things on Thursday.  I can rant and rave about anything I want, from pictures, to what I'm currently working on.  Here we go!

1.  Yesterday I approached a Coscto customer to ask him a question about where to find a Costco product.  It was after I started talking to him that the lanyard he was wearing was from the local school district... (which I have worked for---my husband later said that it would have been worse if it had been my old boss or something) not Costco.  He was really nice but I was so embarrassed and wanted to dig a hole and stay there for the rest of the day!  If you're going into a store, take off your lanyards people!  You confuse me too much.  (And by the way, it's funny now, but it wasn't then. :)

2.  I'm feeling a tad overwhelmed about the amount I still need to do to get ready for this baby to come.  We haven't even painted his room yet!  I have quite a bit of baby stuff thanks to a baby shower, but I'm feeling a bit stressed seeing as I will be 35 weeks tomorrow!  I think I will just really decide what's important, and let the rest go by the wayside.  For instance, because I can't find boy fabric that's affordable, some things will just not get made.  I do need to recover the purple lampshade I have from my teenage years though.  Purple in a boy's room just won't do! :)

3.  I am working on getting projects finished this week that I've started.  I'm working on artwork for my kitchen and family room.  I think once those are done, I can start on other things.  Whew!

Saying Goodbye is Hard to Do

 

Hi there everybody!  Today is kind of a sad one for me.  Now before you worry about some crisis happening in my life, let me stop you.  A few months ago, my husband found a fabulous deal on a Toyota Camry that was stupid to pass up.  But, that meant I would have to sell my precious Corolla.  We have been friends for a long time now, and I became very attached to this particular car.  So this week, I have to say goodbye to my favorite. car. ever.

You see I started out driving a ‘84 Blue-paint-coming-off-so-it-was-partly-black GMC Jimmy.  (I looked left and right for a picture of this beauty.  No luck.  Maybe it’s because it’s so old!) Let’s remember that I’m 5’ 1’’ to begin with.  I had to literally JUMP into that car each time I drove.  And if I was wearing a skirt, which happened from time to time,  it was a LOT worse.  Then I grew up, and so did my brother.  He decided that when he got a license to drive that it was HIS car.

So I ended up with a ‘92 Chevy Lumina.  Not much better, but at least I didn’t have to JUMP to get into my car.  He was gold and I named him Simba.  We became fast friends, even though he was still large for a little 18 year old to be driving herself around town.  Well, something happened and that car was no longer drivable.

My dad bought a white ‘95 Pontiac Bonneville.  And I felt like I was driving a whale.  In fact, his name was Jonah (yes, it doesn’t make sense ON PURPOSE!).  Well, I grew up, fell in love with a Toyota mechanic, and got married.  And when I was dating him and found out he liked Toyotas, I knew we could work out. (I’m only partly serious…kind of! :)

A few months after we got married, my husband came home from work with my precious Corolla.  I had no idea.  It was a fabulous surprise!  The previous owners had ran the engine out of oil, so my husband put in a new engine and it was as good as new.  When he brought it home, it was licensed and insured so I could drive it right away.  That car and I became great friends.  I put over 50,000 miles on it in the first two years of owning it.  We lived 400 miles away from our families for quite awhile, and made a trip home about once a month.  And we moved cross state about 8 times.  And as small as she was, she made a great moving companion.  We had her loaded down like you wouldn’t believe several times.  She handled snowy roads with ease, and maneuvered great.  And she did pretty good passing other cars on the freeway too!  She was small enough that it fit my smaller frame, and I could always see out.  Oh, how I will miss her friendship!  She was very low maintenance compared to the other vehicles I drove as well.  And her name is Crayola.  I will miss you!

And now, I start a new journey with a new car.  Her name is TBA.  When I find one for her, I will let you know.  She is a black 2001 Camry, and very cute.  She has power locks and windows, which is something I longed to have in the Crayola.  She is a bit bigger, which will be really nice once we have a carseat in the back all the time.  This car seems very grown up to me, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to grow up yet.  I will say this:  I told my husband before we ever TALKED about getting married that a Camry was my dream car.  And I liked the 99-2001 body styles the best.  Well how is that for great luck?  That’s what I got!  I will miss my little Crayola like crazy, but I’m sure I will enjoy the Camry as well.

And if you’re still reading this random post about all the cars I’ve driven in my lifetime, thanks!  I just had to write a little tribute to my cute car.  And it was fun to document the rest of the cars I’ve driven over the years.  Hope you are having a great week!  Tomorrow’s Friday, isn’t that fantastic?! :)

No- Sew Monday: Happiness is…

Hello there!  I hope you guys had a great weekend.  I did!  My husband was a dear and bought me a garbage disposal and installed it Friday night for me.  I helped him pick it out, and headed out for a couple errands and came home to a garbage disposal mostly installed and all my under-the-sink kitchen gadgets on the floor.  I couldn’t have been happier!  I recently switched to washing all my dishes by hand- not by preference, but by necessity.  My dishwasher is great, but since the soap regulations have changed, my dishes are always needing to be rewashed.  So, I just do it right the first time.  My husband said that if I could keep the dishes caught up with for 30 days, he would get me a disposal.  I said, “Alright!,” I went an entire month without missing a day.  And then, I waited for us to have funds to get a disposal, and Friday was the day.   I had been talking major renovations about our kitchen/home earlier in the week, and I think my husband realized I needed something to tide me over or he might come home one day to discover cabinets torn out or something! :)

Today as I’ve been doing laundry and other household stuff, I realized that today is just a happy day.   I decided to share with you today what makes me happy.  I’ll start it out with the familiar phrase from a song I learned clear back in 1st grade:

Word of the Year: Focus

Hi everybody.  This morning, I logged on, and saw that there’s a great big linky party at The Lettered Cottage with bloggers sharing their word mottos of the year.  I’ve been pondering having one this year, and the linky party was just enough to gain the courage to share the word with you this year.  To some people, this word will be hilarious.  And even to me and my husband it’s comical.  But sometimes using humor to encourage change in my life is best.

So here we go.  My word is Focus.  Now what’s funny about that, you say?  Well, there’s a tagline.  It goes:

Now, if you’ve seen the movie Up, you will have no problem understanding where this “Squirrel,” thing comes from.  I’ll bring the rest of you up to speed real quick.  In the movie, there is a dog who talks.  He is hunting during the movie, but while he hunts, he smells squirrels several times.  He quickly yells, “Squirrel!!!,” and gets distracted by hunting them.  I don’t remember if he actually catches the squirrels, but simply gets sidetracked by them.

And that brings me to my personal story.

I will be making dinner, and I will think about how I needed to look something up on the computer.  And I will leave dinner on the stove and head to the computer.

I will be cleaning the bathroom, and remember the batch of laundry that needs to be done.  And I’ll leave the bathroom half-clean with cleaning supplies scattered everywhere to do the laundry.

And while I’m doing the laundry, I’ll see that the floor needs to be swept.  And I will sweep them.

And that, my friends is how my days go sometimes.

**Sometimes it’s necessary and required to drop everything and take care of things as they come up, but when it’s day in and day out, it gets really tricky for me.**

I constantly am seeing things that need to be done, and never really finish ANYTHING.

And sometimes, my lack of focus causes disasters.  Like the morning I was running late getting lunches made and breakfast ready.  I had bread in the toaster, and it popped.  I checked it, and it wasn’t brown enough.  So I stuck it back in for a minute to brown….and did something else.  By the time I realized I would have black toast, the toast popped!  Into the garbage that toast went, and into the toaster went new bread.  Simple story, yes, but I really lack focus some days.

So this year, my word is FOCUS.  And I can’t just have a word without having a plan.

How will I focus?

Here’s a few of my ideas.  Some of them I’ve been trying lately and they are really working for me.

Make a Plan:  I have recently gotten a small notebook that I use everyday.  Each evening, I write the date of the following day at the top of the page.  I write a small list of things that need to happen the next day.  I have headings such as Laundry, Errands, My Job, Dinner, Crafty.  Most of those are self-explanatory.  My Job is something that I usually talk to my husband about the night before.  we assign myself something HAS to get done before he gets home that night.  Today, it’s cleaning my car out to get ready to sell. Sometimes it’s getting a bill paid, etc.  This helps me at least get 1 thing done that I give myself recognition for each day.  Crafty is simply a list of optional things I could do during breaks, etc.  Sometimes I forget to do fun things, so this reminds me!  I love crossing off things from my list each day.  And sometimes, plans change, and nothing gets crossed off.  And such is life.  Smile and go on, I say!

Use a Timer:  When I have something to do, such as dishes or folding laundry, I will set a timer.  I need to stick with that task until the timer goes off.  If I think of something else to do, tough beans.  Wait til the timer is done.  If it’s really important and I think I’ll forget it, I hurry and jot it down on a white board.  I get more done when I use a timer, because I can do anything for 7 or 15 minutes.  And when the timer is done, I am too!  I go to  the next task, or take a break.

Posting Reminders:  I will make a few cute word art hangings to put in my home to remind me to reduce the squirrel.

Have Support:  My husband has begun to call “Squirrel!” when I get distracted, and as comical as it is, and I laugh, it helps me return to the task I left.  When he’s home, I can get in the habit of calling out, “Squirrel!” to remind me.  It would be super comical when I get distracted while grocery shopping,  Can you imagine the looks I would get from people! I may have to try it when visiting another town. :)

And there you are my friends, my word of the year is Focus.  And hopefully because of it, I will become a little more organized this year.

Feeling Out Of Sorts

Today, I’ve got nothing for you.  I finished the shirt refashion yesterday, and it turned out awesome.  I spilled something on the shirt a few hours later, and the photo shoot ill just have to wait.  Sorry, but this pregnant woman is always spilling something on her.  And most of the time it’s on her belly.  My husband made fun of me last night as I drug the garbage can right under my belly and brushed the leftover candy-cane crumbs into the garbage can.  He said, “Well, on the bright side, your belly fits right over the garbage can this way.”  Funny moment, I tell you.

Lately, I’ve felt a little down and out of sorts.   I’ve felt super grateful for everything I have, but also just feeling kind of strange.  I think it’s probably because the rush and excitement of the holidays is over, and the next biggest thing we’ve got going on this year is in April.  I’m used to being in school, and being busy this time of year as well.  And this year, I’m not.  Thank goodness, but it’s a big adjustment as well!  I’m feeling great, and taking care of myself, but I am just not feeling like me.  The good part, is that I know this is normal, and that it’s okay.  I am staying busy, doing crafts, keeping my home clean, and spending more time in the kitchen.  Yesterday I made a cake.  Today I made bread and prepped a lasagna, and I’m about to go make tasty breadsticks to go with that lasagna for dinner.  I’m enjoying my time, but I’m lonely at the same time.  It’s a weird thing to explain. 

Sorry to ramble, but this is my blog.  And if I can’t be real here every now and then, why blog?  I hope that you are having a great week, and thank you so much for reading!  You’re appreciated!

Happy New Year, and a Little Secret! :)

Happy New Year everybody!  We're not even going to review last year's new year's resolutions.  But I will say that we have had a wonderful year.  I was a bit sad when 2011 ended actually.  I graduated with my bachelors, we bought a house, and we found out that we'll be having a baby boy in April 2012!  We are so excited to welcome this new addition to our family, and I'm excited to begin being a stay at home mom.

You can look forward to several baby and maternity projects in the near future, because my clothes are definitely not fitting right and maternity clothes aren't very cute and super expensive and hard to find in my area.  There are only a couple stores that carry them, and most are expensive.  So between Ross, Target, and a lot of Refashioning, I hope to get by during the next 3-4 months. 

As of today, my sewing machine is at the shop for the 2nd time in a month.  My pedal is spastic, so I may be needing to get a new one ordered depending on what the Bernina repair man says.  So sewing project may be on hold, but I will be showing you some new things very soon!

What I'm Thankful For

Hello there my friends!  It's good to finally be writing after so long of an absence.  I have been busy, what's new right?  Owning a home is a wonderful thing.  We will never be bored ever again in our lives.  Each night when my husband gets home from work, we are working on one thing or another.  Saturdays are full of yardwork, remodeling, or installing something here or there.  But we are loving it.  Our home is finally feeling like ours, and I'm finally able to say that I love our home.  It takes a while to convince me, probably because we've moved nearly 10 times in 3 years.  And we're done with that. Yay.

Last week, Cheri over at I am Momma Hear Me Roar challenged us to write a list of 50 things we're thankful for.  So, here we go!

Move Complete- Well Kinda!

Hello there!  I am checking in for a minute to let you know we are doing well.  I've got some fun news for you!  We bought our very first home!  We are so excited to have a place to stay for a very long time.  No more boxes, change of address online form thingys (speaking of which I still need to do another one), and no more packing.  But still lots of unpacking to do.  Ugh.

Our home was built in the late 1960's, so there are a few updates to do, a few random colored walls to repaint, and LOTS of space to hang pictures and decorate.  So I imagine if I remember to take pictures of everything, there will be some home improvement posts on their way.  Oh and I didn't mention---I get my very own craft room!!!  Whose walls are a musty pink color.  My husband says it looks brown.  It's bad.  I will get a before picture up as soon as I find the camera, and then I can leave you in suspense wondering how the room will end up.

We are loving having space, and we love our yard.  It's kinda big...6/10 of an acre.  And as we speak, I'm sitting in my husband's shop with his laptop, watching him fix our riding lawn mower so we can mow our jungle of a lawn! :)

We are moving again.  Yes Again.  I've lost count of which # this will be in 3 years of marriage.  I'll be back once the dust settles in a couple weeks or so.  Maybe someday my blogging will become more regular. Maybe not! :)  In the meantime, feel free to visit my Pinterest.

A Few of My Favorite Things

Hi there!  I am in the process of backing up everything on my computer and having my husband reload everything back on my computer.  Now that I've graduated, I'm kicking those college files off my hard drive so I can have some real fun!  I just wanted to pop in for a minute and share with you a couple of the things that I've fallen in love with recently.  I meant to have a tutorial up for you this week...but I celebrated my Birthday and it's thrown off my schedule.  Hopefully soon.

I found this today, and totally want to drink it because it smells soooo good!  It smells fresh and makes me feel ALIVE.  I wanted some new body wash/bubble bath, but I couldn't find a good smell.  I have used Bodycology in the past, but it just wasn't what I wanted today.  I decided to check out the body washes by the soap.  And I fell in love.  It takes a bit to lather up, but I will make a bath pouf with this tutorial tomorrow, and I think I'll be set!

I love having my toenails painted.  In fact, I've been known to paint only the visible toenails peeking out from my sandals right before walking out the door on Sundays to church.  I also have a problem biting my fingernails.  I thought that if I could paint my fingernails, that it would help.  And it has.  Problem is, I love bright colors...but I don't want to look crazy at a store or appointments.  Problem solved.  Meet Del Sol changing color nail polish.  I found several light colored polishes that change to hot pink, or bright orange in the sun.  Outside summer fun=bright nails.  Inside professional-ness=calm nails.  Love it.  (This polish is a bit pricey, so I've asked for it for Christmas/Birthdays.  We have a store where I live, so prices are a tad cheaper than what is listed on the website.)

This gadget is my friend.  It alone got me through my last and toughest semester of college.  It played music on my 2 hour daily commute, kept my to-do lists straight, kept me up on my email, and has a built in TIMER.  My best friend.  I still use the timer like 5 times a day.  And I have not paid one cent for an app, and can find whatever I want for free.  And because it's the iPod Touch and not the iPhone, I don't have to pay ridiculous data fees, and simply use a WiFi connection.  Thanks apple for making such a fabulous toy!

13.5 weeks down...2.5 to go!

Hi friends!  I'm getting closer to having a real life again!  I'm more than halfway done with my second placement, and have only one more assignment to finish for my portfolio!  Then I'll just correct typos and turn everything in again for my final grade.  I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.  Who knew that it would take me six years to get a bachelor's degree, but considering that I took a year off to get married and move several times, I'm doing well.  My program is a five year degree anyways!  I'm just glad I'm really close!  Can't wait to blog more frequently!

Blog Hop and a Giveaway!

How do you keep your home clean and holiday ready during this chaotic season?  What is your biggest holiday cleaning challenge?

For me, keeping my home has always been a challenge.  I've been married 2 years, with no kids yet, and it's still a challenge.  My husband works full-time, and I am a full-time college student.  My program keeps me running from 8:30am to 7:00pm some nights.  I used to have piles and piles of laundry, dirty dishes, and clutter everywhere.  Now I don't.  I try to do simple things such as keep my kitchen sink clean, keep the bathroom counters wiped off, and put things away as I go.  I also try to do a load of laundry a day (mon-fri), and that helps tremendously.  (If you want more info on where I learned these tricks, go here.)

I think the biggest holiday cleaning challenge is keeping floors clean.  Snow and salt gets tracked in, and it just gets gross! :)

Flying Lessons!

I decided after the first week of school that I really needed to figure out a way to organize my life so I can keep my house clean, laundry done, and my husband happy.  That’s when I discovered Flylady.net.  LOVE IT!  It’s quite a quirky and cheesy website, but it makes it fun---and when cleaning your house is fun it’s all worth it!

I am currently taking flying lessons, in which FLY stands for: Finally Loving Yourself.  This system not only helps you keep your house clean, but it helps you remember that you need to take care of and value YOU!  And it all start with simply shining your sink!

I found the link for fly lady from a blog, and it’s changing my life!  So I wanted to share the link on my blog in hopes that somebody else will be able to benefit from it!

Hope you’re all doing well!  I’ve got another shirt refashion and purse in the works…I just need to find a little “me,” time to get it wrapped up!

I’ve been out of the loop for a couple weeks, but here’s the latest “Hoo are You Tuesday.”  Stay tuned, I have a fabulous T-shirt scheduled to be posted tomorrow.  I think it’s my favorite so far. :)

1. What is your favorite flavor?  I love fruity flavors.  Probably Raspberry or Peach are my favorite.  Oh, but don’t forget Mango.  I Love Mango (especially Mango Kool-aid)!

2. What was or is your favorite subject in school?  Well, I’m currently studying Special Education and love it.  But in general, I love English and writing papers.  (Writing papers…yes). :)

3. What are some of your hobbies?  I love to read, play the clarinet, find good deals on clothes to refashion, sew, make beaded necklaces, sing, blog, help people, play with children, try new (easy) recipes.  I love try new things and learn stuff, but am not really adventure-y. :)

4. Do you prefer fruits or vegetables?  FRUITS.  Enough Said.

5. What color of eyes do you have?  I have green eyes.

Lynette’s Laughable Life: A True Story!

Hi there!  This post has a story to go with it.  I get to tell you something funny that happened.  Once upon a time, there was a girl named Lynette (that’s me!).  She had a great idea to make a ruffle shirt.  She gathered her ruffles together, and started to sew them vertically down her shirt.  Just as she was sewing the last ruffle on, she sewed her shirt together.  In several places.  She unpicked the seams, but she learned quickly that unpicking knits usually ends up in holes.  So now she had a holy ruffly shirt!  That shirt sat for months in a box where it couldn’t be seen.  Lynette’s sister, K, saw it and liked it.  She cut out the ruffles, sewed the parts that had been unpicked, and appliquéd it onto a brown t-shirt.  While reinforcing the ruffles to the shirt, she too sewed her shirt together!  Lynette quickly unpicked it, and as the shirt was a thicker knit, the holes were too tiny to worry about.  K left it as is and modeled it proudly for me to show off here.

This shirt is made with three thin strips of ruffles.  Normally you’d just sew the ruffles to the shirt, but this had to be a tad different because of our previous struggles! :) Linking to these parties!

Hoo Are You Thursday...ahem...Tuesday!

Hi friends!  I've been a busy person this week!  With my last week of nanny-ing, visiting and making quick gifts for brand new babies, cleaning and organizing my whole apartment (especially my craft/sewing spot!!!!), I haven't had much time for tutorials or blogging.  I have something super cool in the works though, so hang tight until (hopefully) sometime next week!  Meanwhile, here's a Hoo are You Tuesday....a little late!

1. What is your favorite thing about your dad?

His sense of humor, and his way of turning something annoying or frustrating into something funny.  I can't be mad for very long while he's around.

2. What are you favorite smells? Mango/citrus-y stuff, cucumber melon, fresh-baked bread, chocolate chip cookies, and lasagna cooking (this is making me hungry!!!)

3. What is your favorite Holiday?

My Birthday! (The flags go up on my birthday, so that's fun too!)

4. What did you want to be when you grew up?

Always wanted to be a teacher...and I'm almost there!

5. How many different places have you lived, towns not houses?

I've lived in 5 different towns so far.
